Alan Ritchie

It is with immense sadness that Carlton Brass announce the death of Alan Ritchie. Alan passed away in a tragic boating accident on Wednesday 30th July leaving us all in a state of shock.

Our thoughts are with his parents, Walter and Marie, and his family and friends at this most difficult of times.

Alan was a dedicated, talented bandsman, having played with many bands in the Midlands over the years. He has only been with Carlton Brass for a short time but has a long association with the organisation, having also played with Nottingham City Transport. He’s also been a much-loved member of both the Foss Dyke Band and Thoresby and is well known throughout the country as a great guy and exceptional musician. He will be sadly missed by us all.

Whit Fun

Carlton Brass have enjoyed a fun day (and night) in the delightful region of Tameside for the traditional Brass Band event Whit Friday Marches.
The band loaded themselves into a large, red Premier coach at two in the afternoon and headed across the Derbyshire Dales towards the beer-soaked, band-loving villages of Lancashire. The drive over was [...]

Vacancies

Carlton Brass are looking some quality brass musicians to bolster the band in its ambitions to improve towards contests later in the year.

We currently have positions open for cornets, front row and back, Bb bass and second trombone. We especially need a quality euphonium play for our soloist position.

Farewell and thanks

We’ve had a couple of recent departures from our ranks in recent weeks. Craig Anderson, purveyor of some beefy tones on the Bb Bass, has left due to work commitments. Kris Reeder, an excellent addition to our trombone section has come to the end of his law degree and departs for the southern counties.
The band [...]

Friday 16th May 2008 - Whit Friday Marches

Success at the Midlands Area

2008 has seen Carlton Brass in the First Section for the very first time in its history, and so the band was expecting a tough task at this year’s area contest in Bedworth. The chosen test piece, James Cook Circumnavigator by Gilbert Vinter, was a difficult piece and we had spent many extra rehearsals polishing our performance.

Butlins Mineworkers Contest 2008

The 2008 contesting season got underway in sunny Skegness last weekend with the 2008 Butlins Minworkers Championships. Carlton Brass joined the First Section for the very first time in a huge field of 24 bands, vying for the top prize of £1500 and the much sought-after champions banner.

The choice of test piece was a golden oldie - Edward Gregson’s The Plantagenets - a piece we’d been practising since last year for the Leicester and Leamington contests. It’s a great piece, full of clever musicality and the odd trap-door for the unsuspecting soloists.
