Lakeside Entertainments Contest
Stannington band took home 1st prize and the George Slattery Memorial Cup as well as the prize and trophy for the most entertaining band. The entertainment adjudicators commented: “Looked Good…..All Round Entertainment…..The Best & Most Entertaining Band”.
These prizes were received on stage by the band’s youngest member – Cornet player Becky Ball who has recently progressed from Stannington’s training band and promises to be a ‘star of the future’ for the band.
Karen Bolt, principal horn player (and member of the band since she was 11) also won her 3rd soloist prize by scooping the prize for best soloist on the day with her performance of Peter Graham’s ‘A time for Peace’ on which David Read commented : “Pleasing sound from the soloist…..I enjoyed it very much”
The band opened their 25 minute programme with Sandy Smith’s arrangement of the cornet feature ‘Valero’ this led into the second movement of Peter Graham’s Call of the Cossacks suite ‘Gypsy Dream’ which was followed with an entertaining performance of ‘Cartoon Music’ – complete with bells, whistles, hooters and squeaks! This was contrasted with Karen’s prize winning solo ‘A time for Peace’. The band then featured their talented trombone section with the timeless classic trio ‘Trombola’ and closed their programme with music from the big screen by playing a selection of music from the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’. David Read finalised his comments by saying: “This a well balanced band with a good sound, well directed throughout”
