The 2020 Area contest is just around the corner – tomorrow! – and we will be finishing off our preparations of the test piece (Tom Davoren’s excellent Legacy) tonight. We’ve had some excellent rehearsals recently under the direction of Geoff Wood – along with the assistance of Tony Wilson – and we are primed to give as good a performance in Bedworth for many a year. The band is sounding great!
Helping us get to this stage are a number of new players, some of which we have seen before. We have been looking for a solo euphonium player for a little while and we are really pleased to welcome Gary Glover to the band – again. Gary has previous form with Carlton, both as a player and as musical director. He is an exceptional musician and we are very pleased to have him back with us.
Our trombone section has also been bolstered with two new players: the experienced Kevin Stewart will be leading the section on solo trombone, while he will be ably supported by University of Nottingham student Ellie ‘Tay’ Taylor on second trombone. We will be playing four trombones at the Area as we have invited Rosie Stafford along from our sister band Burton Joyce Community Brass – she is a rapidly improving young player and will be reinforcing the second trombone part with Tay.
Elsewhere in the band we are also welcoming Richard Bateman on solo cornet, along with the return of former solo horn player Andy Gillie, and Richard Harbour on Eb bass. Geoff Hawley has kindly moved onto solo cornet.
We mustn’t forget the rear-most section of the band: percussion. We’ve found three new percussionists this year and they’re making a superb racket. We are delighted that Cameron Worne, Richard Arblaster and Alan McKenzie have joined our ranks. They have some of the most challenging parts in Legacy and they are doing a super job at driving the band along.
The band has had a challenging year since the Area in 2019 but we are improving all the time and really enjoying our rehearsals with Geoff Wood. We are very thankful indeed for the players that joined us last year and have been fantastic assets to the band: Phil White on assistant principal cornet, Simon Challendor on Flugelhorn, Izzy Dynan on Baritone, and Katherine Onions on second cornet have been exceptional members of Carlton Brass. Thank you!
We head into the contest in Bedworth hopeful of a good performance and in good spirits. We are looking at a number of events during 2020, so we hope to see you there. Thank you to everyone that supports Carlton Brass – we couldn’t do this without you.
