The band were delighted to perform at Whatton House Gardens last Friday at a charity event. The East Leake Catholic Women’s League organised an evening concert, with cheese and wine, in support of Help For Heroes – and charity aimed at supporting servicemen and women injured in the line of duty.

We played a selection of music for those attending the event, including the emotional themes of Benedictus by Karl Jenkins, from his piece The Armed Man, a Mass For Peace.

Whatton House has some beautiful gardens set in the glorious Leicestershire countryside. It was a pleasure to perform there for such a deserving charity. Many thanks to those that attended – we hope you enjoyed our music.

Carlton Brass kicked off the summer season with two concerts in one day last Saturday. Starting in the afternoon the band performed in the St Georges Day celebration in Nottinghams ‘Old Market Square’ where we perfrormed to a massed crowd of several hundred people who all enjoyed a varied programme including solos from the bands Principle Cornet (Andrew Alison) and Solo Euphonium (Barry Tupper). A special mention must go to Andrew and to James Conheeney (Repiano Cornet) who deputised admirably for the volcano affected Rutty with the vocal contributions in Cartoon Classics!

The band moved on to perform a St Georges Day Proms concert for Mapperley Rotary Club in West Bridgeford. At the end of the evening there were a lot of tired and bruised lips but for the first outing of the summer season we gave it our best.

Special thanks must go to all our friends who helped out on this very busy day!

Saturday 28th February saw Carlton Brass enjoying another performance at the Gedling Proms. The band are proud to play at this event, in support of the Major of Gedling’s chosen charity, and this weekend’s concert was a lot of fun.

Sharing the stage this year were the Alan Johnson Singers (an excellent Operatic group who have shared Christmas duties at Lakeside with the band for the last few years) and the talented crooner Ryan Brodsky.

Carlton Forum was packed, as usual, for the concert which featured an eclectic mix of music: everything from a beautiful euphonium solo by Barry Tupper through a bit of Motown from Ryan, and some wonderfully performed Opera by the Alan Johnson Singers. The evening was topped off my some rousing proms music from the band, ably supported by the many voices (and plenty of union flags) in the hall.

The audience had an extra surprise during the proms – the band appeared in full fancy-dress!

Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat. And Carlton Brass have begun the busy Christmas concert season in style.

Thursday 4th December saw the band performing at Southwell Minster. This was the annual MacMillan Christmas concert that we've been able to support as an organisation for the past seven years. It's a favourite of ours in the banding calender as it's a great charity and a wonderful venue for a concert.

Joining us at the Minster were Carlton Male Voice Choir, who were in excellent voice, and the rather wonderful Lace City Chorus who just seem to get better and better every year.

Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat. And Carlton Brass have begun the busy Christmas concert season in style.

Thursday 4th December saw the band performing at Southwell Minster. This was the annual MacMillan Christmas concert that we’ve been able to support as an organisation for the past seven years. It’s a favourite of ours in the banding calender as it’s a great charity and a wonderful venue for a concert.

Joining us at the Minster were Carlton Male Voice Choir, who were in excellent voice, and the rather wonderful Lace City Chorus who just seem to get better and better every year. The Minster was packed to the rafters with an audience that enjoyed an evening of Christmas-themed music.

The highlight of the concert, at least for the ladies in Lace City Chorus, was the band’s rendition of the old classic Hello Dolly. This was specially requested for the evening and the band were pleased to include it. The band’s hearty singing certainly had enthusiasm but perhaps didn’t come up to the same standard as the proper choirs!

The band’s MD, Walter Richie, had managed to find some excellent music for the band for the Christmas season, including a wonderful arrangement of Who Is He? This is described as a “Christmas Meditation” and it’s a lovely piece that brought special praise from the audience. Also featured was a BBb Bass solo called Marley’s Ghost and played by the talented Mick Graham.

Thursday’s program was expanded for Saturday night’s concert at St Paul’s Church in Carlton. This was a shared concert with Carlton Male Voice Choir and showcased the musical talent available in our part of Nottingham. Once again there were no empty seats and the audience enjoyed a number of carols and Christmas-themed music aplenty.

Walter had added some lovely Salvation Army Christmas music to the programme which featured a beautiful Euphonium solo called Infant Holy, performed by Barry Tupper. St Paul’s is a lovely church to play in, especially as the acoustics assist in giving the band an even richer, warmer sound. The concert went well with both the choir and band in good form and everybody left feeling more Christmassy.

Carlton Brass with be performing carols out and about over the next few weeks including a number of appearances at Lakeside. The Training Band are putting in a lot of effort by playing carols at Sainsbury’s in Arnold, among other locations, and the main band will also be joining them where we can. We’re trying to raise funds for new instruments so please support the players when you see them so that we can continue providing our wonderful music in future years.

To all those that have come to our recent concerts or donated to our carollers – thank you!
